Star Anise
What is it called in the world?
This star-shaped fruit is closely related to magnolia family grown in Southern China and Vietnam. The essential part of the plant is the pericarp which gives warm, sweet, aromatic sensorium to fried foods. In China it is one of the components of Five spice powders the others are cinnamon, cloves, fennel, Sichuan pepper in equal parts. These five spices are added to the battered fried vegetables or meat used in Cantonese style of cooking and Sichuan style of cooking. Five flavoured Pork is a delicious prepared using this combination of spices. In India it is used in rice dishes of north Indian style Briyani. In Vietnam it is popular for its use in beef soup. In West It used sometimes in pickles and relishes.
